Escape
from the Shades
The
first reviews of this book, published in February 2023, have now been received.
The book tells of two orphans, growing up in poverty in the East End of London
in Victorian times and the way in which the criminal justice system then
operated, with no right for defendant to give evidence on their own behalf.
They keep a dog to protect them and are assisted by Dr Barnardo but their
chances are put at risk when there is an assault in the notorious Rookeries.
The
book is aimed at children aged between 8 and 12. Each chapter is approximately
1000 words so that each is suitable as a bedtime story but many children will
be able to read the text on their own.
“I
finished the book. It was pretty good”
(V aged 12)
“ M (aged 11) agreed that it was
absorbing and interesting to read how children lived in that era and especially
how working children got by. It was a really good plot and a good
story“.
“I
enjoyed it very much. The story was engrossing and I especially liked the
changes in narration from Tom to Bobby.
The
trial is a great climax.” (HC)
